Ann Stedman (1775)

It is not certain whether Ann ever married, certainly was still single at the time of her father’s death in 1804, because the Will refers to Ann as ‘Ann Stedman’.

Ann had two sons probably illegitimately : Benjamin b.1797 and William b. 1808.

William went to Jamaica, settled and founded a dynasty of Stedmans there. He married Bertha Milbourn, the daughter of a Scottish Presbyterian Minister. Their children were:

William (jnr) married Matilda de Pass in 1894. They lived in Mandeville in Jamaica where they raised their nine children:

James Stedman (1777-1851)

James farmed at Weston, a hamlet lying between Stow and Bucknell on the road to Knighton. James married Ann and there were two children known from this marriage:

Mary Ann b. 1798 married James Edwards and there was known to be at least one son from this marriage: James b. 1815.

James (II) b.1801 married Ann Bright in 1819 in Clunbury. From their marriage there were five children:

James (III) married (i)Jane Farmer and there were nine children from their marriage:

i. Ann b. abt 1853 married James Trow and there was known to be one child from the marriage.

ii. James Richard b. 1857 married Elizabeth Ann Morris (1) and Ellen Brown (2).

iii. Jane b. 1857

iv. George Edward b. 1859 married Celia Morris in 1883 in New Zealand.

v. Charles b. abt 1859

vi. Arthur Robert b. 1860 married Catherine Mary Hand. There were five children from this marriage. Arthur emigrated to New Zealand as did his brother George. The children from Arthur and Catherine’s marriage were:

Jane died in 1865 and in 1866 James (III) married Charlotte Hyde with whom he had seven children:

James farmed at various places in Herefordshire and was a prize Hereford cattle breeder. His son Henry Hyde farmed in Bucknell until his death in 1963.
