Caleb Stedman (1761-1816)

Caleb the third son of Page and Sarah was a Mercer.  He married the Jane, daughter of the Rev. Reynolds on 14 Jan 1798 at St George’s Church, Hanover Square, London, and lived and worked in London.  He had a draper’s shop at 21 New Bond Street in London.  And died in 1816 at the age of 56.  His wife Jane died in 1845.

There were nine children from their marriage  all born at Hanover Square:

Page Smallman Stedman (1757-1826)

Page, the eldest child of Page and Sarah married Elizabeth Tudor in Brampton Bryan church on 8 March 1791. They farmed at Bedstone and lived at the Manor Hall Farm in Bedstone. There were eight children from this marriage:

(a) William as eldest son, inherited his father’s farm in Bedstone after his father’s death in 1826. William moved back to Bucknell by the time of the 1871 census, and was still farming, though by this time he was in his late 70s. William never married. His cousin Sarah Tudor was his housekeeper. William died 15 July 1875 and is buried in St Mary’s churchyard.

(b) Elizabeth Tudor married Edward Bright on 26 May 1818. One son is known to have been born – Richard b. 1820.

(c) Sarah Smallman married Thomas Bright on 20 April 1818. From their marriage there were four children:

(d) Page Smallman was 48 when he died on 14 February 1846 in Bedstone.

(e) Ann married Samuel Baldwin on 17 May 1820 at Bedstone. There were three children from this marriage,

Ann is buried with her husband Samuel at Chapel Lawn, a hamlet near Bucknell.

(f) Caleb married his first cousin Jane (b.1807), daughter of his uncle John Stedman (b. 1759) and his wife Ann Jones. Caleb and Jane farmed 300 acres of land at Stow Farm. There were eight children from this marriage:

(ii) Caleb married Mary Ann Tudor in 1861. Caleb was a Farm Bailiff on his father’s farm in 1851. Their children were:

(iii) William married Elizabeth Prosser in 1857.

(vii) John William born in Stowe and died 17 May 1895 in Kensington, London. John William married Emily Mower on 11 April 1873 in Shoreditch, Middlesex. She was born abt 1843 in Dalston, Middlesex and died between 1881-1891.

(viii) James B married Pamela. He worked as a baker in Bucknell. There were five children from this marriage:

John Stedman (1759-1852)

The second son of Page and Sarah, John farmed in Bucknell and lived at the Old Farm. Prior to his marriage, John had a liaison with Elizabeth Probert, resulting in the birth of John Stedman Probert b. 1789. John Stedman Probert lived and worked in Bucknell and the surrounding area.

John Stedman Probert married twice. With his first wife Mary, they had four children

(a) Edward was a farmer at Lower Woodhouse Farm, Farrington, near Knighton. He married Ann Rollings (1832-1900) and they had eight children:

In 1793 John Stedman married Ann Jones from Brecon by Banns at St Mary’s Church, Bucknell. Ann’s uncle, the Rev. William Watkins, the vicar of St Mary’s, officiated. There were ten children born to John and Ann, nine of whom survived infancy:

(iii) William married Charlotte Hull in February 1853 and there were three children from this marriage:

By 1871 John Stedman (b. 1759) had died and William had taken over the Old Farm at Bucknell with 400 acres of land. William died in 1874.

(iv) Elizabeth Stedman married William Wall from Eardisley Herefordshire on 24 February 1825. William was a farmer of 85 acres. They had five children:

(v) John Smallman Stedman b. 17 January 1803 and christened 6 July 1806,

married Maria Valentine in Ludlow on 8 December 1829, and made their

first home in Church Stretton. They then moved to Heartsease, just a few

miles from Bucknell on the Knighton Road, where John farmed. There

were five children from this marriage.

o Mary b 1843 who married Herbert Bird in Knighton in 1874 and had 5 childlren.

o John Smallman b 1845 who married Elizabeth Jane Wall in Whitechapel Middlesex in 1872.

o Charles Menlove b. 1840 d 1909, who married his first cousin Laura Caroline Stedman in 1877. They had seven children. Most of the sons emigrated to America when farming slumped in the late 19th century.

o Ann Valentine b 1846 who lived with her sister Mary and probably didn’t marry.

John Smallman (1803) died at Heartsease on 2 July 1864 aged 61. His

wife Maria died in 1874 aged 71.

(vi) Jane Stedman married her first cousin Caleb (son of her uncle Page Smallman) and there were eight children from this marriage (Click A to see the reords of these children)

(vii) Richard Smallman married Mary Burlton (sibling of Peter Burlton who married Richard’s sister Caroline) on 4 December 1832. They lived and farmed with their five children at Bucknell Hall. Mary died in 1842. Their five children were :

Richard Smallman’s married his second wife, Mary Ann Williams (b.1817)

on 10 October 1843, and had a further six children:

+ Caleb sadly drowned on his way back from an evening at the Sitwell Arms

in Bucknell, in a pond in the field at the rear of Bucknell Hall in October

1912, age 65.

+ Ann Maria married George Garsed.

+ Laura Caroline married her cousin Charles Menlove Stedman, son of her

uncle John Smallman Stedman [see (v) above].

+ Herbert emigrated to South Africa with his half brother John Henry in

about 1871. He returned and married Anna Louisa Jones (b.1866 Stokesay)

on 2 July 1890 and the couple returned to South Africa. There were three

daughters from this marriage:

(viii) Caroline married Peter Burlton on 3 July 1838, and lived at Lower Lyde Court, Pipe and Lyde area of north Herefordshire. Peter was a farmer of 306 acres. There were two children from their marriage:

Peter (junior) died at the age of 2 months. Peter Burlton senior died in 1865 and Caroline remarried Henry Dashwood, a merchant, and moved to Alverstoke in Hampshire, where she died in 1889. Her son Henry Peter Stedman Burlton married twice. There were no children from his first marriage to Elizabeth Lapthorn, but from his second marriage to Laurel Jane Williams there were nine children:

(ix) Charlotte married Thomas Sheriff, a farmer, at St Mary’s Bucknell in 1843.

Thomas, son of Thomas and Jane Longmore, farmed at Lower Buckton Farm

in Buckton, a tiny hamlet within the parish of Bucknell. Thomas’ parents

were farming at nearby Coxall.

There were seven children born to Thomas and Charlotte:

By 1862 four of the children had died together with their father. Charlotte

Ann married Henry James from Presteigne, in 1867 at St Bartholomew’s

Church, Areley Kings, Stourport. They made their home in Presteigne, and

Charlotte senior settled there with her one remaining son Henry. Charlotte

(nee Stedman) died in Presteigne on 24 May 1902.

Edward Stedman (1763-1821)

Edward, the fourth son of Page and Sarah farmed in the nearby Radnor Forest, just over the border in Radnorshire (now part of Powys in Wales). The family lived at Cwmygerwyn which lies in a dingle between Fforest Fach, Storling Bank and Llethr Du. in the parish of Cascob.

Edward’s first marriage was to Martha Jones by licence in Ludlow on 30 September 1785. From this marriage there were five children:

d. Hariette married William Luggar and they had a daughter, Emily born about 1857.

Edward’s second wife was Jane.

(v) John married Mary Boston on 9 Feb 1829. Mary came from Cascob. From their marriage there were nine children:

Ann Stedman (1775)

It is not certain whether Ann ever married, certainly was still single at the time of her father’s death in 1804, because the Will refers to Ann as ‘Ann Stedman’.

Ann had two sons probably illegitimately : Benjamin b.1797 and William b. 1808.

William went to Jamaica, settled and founded a dynasty of Stedmans there. He married Bertha Milbourn, the daughter of a Scottish Presbyterian Minister. Their children were:

James Stedman (1777-1851)

James farmed at Weston, a hamlet lying between Stow and Bucknell on the road to Knighton. James married Ann and there were two children known from this marriage:

James farmed at various places in Herefordshire and was a prize Hereford cattle breeder. His son Henry Hyde farmed in Bucknell until his death in 1963.
